Miniature analytical devices have recently become a growing area to produce handheld, field-portable instrumentation. Because of the difficulty to micromachine optical components and features with small aberrations, it is necessary to incorporate new doped silicon micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) methods. This technique allows for precise manufacturing of small electrical and mechanical device assemblies. We have created and tested ten new MEMS based ion optical assemblies. This list includes the Bradbury-Nielsen Gate, cylindrical ion trap, time-lag focusing TOF, reflectron optics, einzel lens, electron beam collimator, periodic focusing, and ion mobility. Data has been presented showing the resolution, attenuation, and performance of each of these devices. With the ability to utilize multiple substrates such as Pyrex, sapphire, and aluminum nitride, we can make ion lenses that can withstand an applied potential >2kV before breakdown. These devices have been created with <5um feature sizes and <250nm position accuracy. The angular alignment of the assembled structures is shown to be less than 1 degree.

Microscale Biological Analysis Utilizing Nanomanipulation Coupled with Nanospray Mass Spectrometry

Recent technological developments have challenged the theoretical and practical barriers of imaging, manipulation, and molecular characterization. The improvements in nanospray mass spectrometry in terms of versatility and sensitivity have led to an emphasis on analyzing small molecular concentrations and volumes. Here we have developed a modified bioworkstation (L200 by Zyvex, Richardson, TX) that permits the direct manipulation of biological samples that is amenable to direct nanospray MS analysis. The utilization of nanospray capillaries and various end-effectors (e.g. microgrippers, tungsten probes) allows the manipulation of cells down to the organelle level that can be primed for extraction and mass spectrometric characterization.

One of the group’s focus is to develop and evaluate the capabilities of mass spectrometry and ion drift tubes for isolation of monodisperse species from heterogeneous ion populations. Gas-phase clusters, fullerenes, copper, and gold, are being generated using pulsed-laser vaporization. Metal carbides have been generated utilizing the Smalley nozzle. These techniques, which typically produce an assortment of cluster sizes and compositions, all involve vaporization of a target followed by condensation of the gas-phase atoms to form clusters. These novel frontends are being coupled to a Paul ion trap for compositional analysis and characterization of cluster formation.

Guido F. Verbeck, IV

Dr. Guido F. Verbeck, Associate Professor of Chemistry, is an expert is mass spectrometry, specifically instrument design and development.  Dr. Verbeck received his PhD as a Proctor & Gamble fellow in chemistry under Dr. David H. Russell at Texas A&M University.  Dr. Verbeck has developed ion cyclotron resonance, time-of-flight, and ion trap mass spectrometers over the past 12 years, and has been a member of the analytical community for 17 years. Among this design portfolio, Dr. Verbeck has developed a miniature ion trap mass spectrometer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, 3 preparative mass spectrometers for combing new materials and catalysts, and a number of novel analytical applications for characterizing oils, gunshot residue, and illicit drugs.

Dr. Verbeck had 2 appointments in industry.  The first was at ANGUS Chemical Company, in Sterlington, LA, where he was a Quality Control Chemist for 2 years.  The second appointment was with Zyvex, where he designed novel MEMS microfabricated devices for ion manipulation and detection. 

Dr. Verbeck’s appointment is at the University of North Texas where he continues to design novel ion optical devices for miniaturization, preparative, and analytical mass spectrometry.
