The Literary Debutante Ball is a benefit that celebrates One Story’s 10th anniversary, the publication of our debutantes’ first books, and honors the best-selling author Ann Patchett for her exceptional support of other writers.

To mark the Olympics, the BBC and Book Trust embarked on a world-wide quest for the best international short story. Judges of the prestigious BBC Award, Ross Raison, Michele Roberts and Di Speirs, will be joined by two of the short-listed writers, Lucy Caldwell and Miro Penkov. Ross Raison’s novels include God’s Own Country and Waterline; his stories have appeared in the Guardian and Prospect. Michele Roberts is an acclaimed novelist and short story writer. Her latest book is Ignorance. Di Speirs is BBC4 Editor, Readings. Participating short listed writers will be announced after 16th September on the Small Wonder website.

They join judge and short story writer Michèle Roberts for an enjoyable evening of discussion and readings.

Bio
Miroslav Penkov was born in 1982 in Bulgaria. He arrived in America in 2001 and completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology and an M.F.A. in creative writing at the University of Arkansas. He has won the Eudora Welty Prize in Fiction, and his stories have appeared in A Public Space, One Story, Orion, The Southern Review, The Sunday Times, Granta Online, Five Chapters, The Best American Short Stories 2008, The 2012 PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories.

His debut collection of stories EAST OF THE WEST was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in the US (July 2011), by Ciela in Bulgaria (December 2011) and in ten other countries.
