Intersectionality of Gender and Race: The Strategic Role of Latina State Legislators.

With Luis Fraga, Linda Lopez and Ricardo Ramirez.. This is a project that is sponsored by the National Association of Latino/a Elected Officials. We collected biographical date, voting records and district characteristics for all 220 Latino and Latina state legislators who were serving in 2004 and also conducted a 35 minute telephone interview with 153 of these officials. We currently are using the data to examine whether Latina elected officials, relative to their co-ethnic male counterparts, are more effective advocates for working class communities of color. Thus far we have presented three papers at professional conferences, published one article in Journal of Women, Politics and Policy and have a chapter in an edited volume.

The Latino National Survey (LNS) and Latino National Contextual Database (LNCD).

With Luis R. Fraga, John A. Garcia, Rodney H. Hero, Michael Jones-Correa, and Gary M. Segura. First-ever state-stratified survey of Latinos in the U.S with a sample size of 9,800 adult respondents from eighteen states and the District of Columbia. Total of approximately $1.4 million received to date from Ford, Carnegie, Russell Sage, Hewlett, Irvine, Joyce, National Science, Anney E. Casey, Rhode Island Foundations and Texas A&M University. Currently finishing the compilation of the contextual database that will be appended to the survey data. We have presented numerous conference papers, published one article in APSR, completed one book manuscript and are in the process of writing two additional books and at least one more journal article.
The Politics of Latino Education.

With Ken Meier, Eric Juenke Gonzales and David Leal. A longitudinal study of local school boards that examines the effects of Latino/a leadership/representation on minority student outcomes. We surveyed more than 1,800 school districts nationwide and are appending our data to EEOC data and other contextual data. Thus far we have presented four conference papers, published one article in JOP and are currently contemplating a complete rewrite of the Politics of Latino Education, published in 1988 by Joseph Stewart and Ken Meier.
