JOUR 3410 Public Relations for Nonprofits
Taught Fall 2013. Introduction to public relations focusing on nonprofit governance, strategies, and communications. Lecture format with exercises in planning, writing, communications audits, and case studies.

JOUR 3420 Public Relations Writing
Basic public relations writing course in the Mayborn School of Journalism at UNT. Intensive writing course.  Students are required to choose an actual client (business, government or non-profit), with all classroom assignments written for that client.  Publication of  one feature story about their client is a requirement.  Students gain an understanding of client service and relationship-building.  Social media applications are introduced in this course, and students are expected to produce finished pieces utilizing basic graphic design principles.

JOUR 4270.001 Topics (Social Media Strategies/meets with JOUR 5350.707))
First taught Spring 2011, repeated Spring 2012 and Spring 2013 and Summer 2013 (as Journalism 4980). Permanent course number took effect in Fall 2013, offered every long semester and one summer session. Course in strategies, tactics, ethics and legal issues surrounding use of social media in strategic communications, including the sociological and cultural influences on emerging media. Emphasis is on public relations and advertising applications of social media but news/editorial journalism majors are included because of their constant interaction with public relations professionals. Students will explore emerging technologies and apply them to real-world problems through class activities, analytical exercises, case study analyses, and exposure to social media professionals.

JOUR 4460 PR Communications
Advanced public relations writing and campaign design course in the Mayborn School of Journalism at UNT. (Spring 2010--present)  Intensive writing class. During the first half of the semester students build on the skills they learned in Jour 3420 by creating advanced writing assignments for their client from that class.  Social media skills and strategies are emphasized, with required assignments that supplement writing for traditional media--for example, students are required to blog regularly about public relations and society, and apply what they are learning in their classes to observations of the public relations profession. The second half of the semester engages the students working in teams in a project to design a public relations campaign for an actual client chosen by the instructor. Students gain experience solving real-world problems as well as counseling and working with external clients.  For Spring 2010 students presented comprehensive marketing/PR programs (with produced collateral materials) for the Denton County Transportation Authority's rollout of light rail service between Lewisville and Carrollton.

JOUR 4470 Ethics, Law and Diversity for Strategic Communications
Spring & Fall 2010, Spring & Fall 2011, Spring 2012 and Spring 2014. Core capstone course in communications ethics, legal and diversity issues for strategic communications majors in the Mayborn School of Journalism at UNT. (Spring 2010--present) Students are introduced to the history and theories of ethical behavior and given the tools necessary to make ethical business decisions.  The are expected to become familiar with the codes of ethics of the following organizations:  PRSA, IABC, WOMMA, NIRI, The Arthur Page Society, and other professional organizations within the strategic communications field. They will be expected to apply their knowledge of these codes to actual case studies and blog posts. Combining theory with practice, the students are challenged to analyze events in strategic communications and the media in real time as well as historical case studies. Students are required to blog regularly about current topics chosen by the instructor, applying theories and codes of ethics learned in class to their analysis of the topic.  Media law and diversity issues as they apply to strategic communications are integral throughout the course, and the evolving use of social media is studied and analyzed from legal, ethical and diversity perspectives.  Awareness of diversity issues--in the workplace, in the media, in our culture--is an underlying theme applied to all class discussions and projects.

JOUR 4800 Professional Internship
All Fall and Spring semesters. Supervision of Public Relations internships at agencies, corporations, nonprofits and sports organizations. (Spring 2010--present)

JOUR 5350 Topics in Journalism (Formerly JOUR 5100)
Fall 2009 and Fall 2010 (as JOUR 5100) and Fall 2011 & 2012 as JOUR 5350. Graduate public relations survey class in the Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism at UNT. (Fall 2009--present, fall semesters) Students are exposed to numerous concepts and problems in public relations through extensive exposure to guest speakers from the profession, strategic planning, readings and an integrated planning exercise.  Students are required to keep a blog in which they will discuss cases and presentations by guest speakers.

Samra Jones Bufkins, MJ, APR
Samra Jones Bufkins received her Bachelor of General Studies, a self-directed interdisciplinary degree, from the University of Kentucky with emphasis on television production, journalism and English.
After several years working in television production, programming and public affairs and three years in Saudi Arabia, Sam made the shift to Public Relations when she earned her MJ from North Texas State University (Now UNT).
Her career in public relations includes strategic communications for the healthcare, environmental, energy, petrochemical, shipping and electricity industries, encompassing public relations, crisis communications, issues management, fund raising, internal communications, and governmental relations.  She has worked for agencies, non-profits, a state agency and Fortune 500 companies, and is Accredited in Public Relations by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).
Sam enthusiastically incorporates social media strategies and applications into her classes in public relations writing, PR communications, public relations for nonprofits and ethics for strategic communications. Sam developed (and still teaches) the first strategic social media class at UNT, bringing in nationally-known speakers and technical experts. She is a member of Kappa Tau Alpha and is the faculty advisor to the UNT chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), the UNT Social Media Club and the ATO fraternity. Her teaching philosophy involves combining theory with practice while mentoring and coaching students as if they were junior employees of her PR firm or corporate communications department.

She lives in Denton with her husband and is active in the Dallas and Fort Worth chapters of PRSA where she has assumed leadership positions in the Accreditation and Professional Development programs. She serves on the communications committee of the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Dallas. Prior to joining the Mayborn faculty she was the Dallas PRSA chapter liaison to the UNT PRSSA chapter, and for four years chaired the Accreditation committee, shepherding more than a dozen PR practitioners through the process of becoming Accredited in Public Relations. She has also served on the PRSA national Accreditation Marketing Committee.
Sam is fascinated with social media and its effect on society and traditional media, and wishes Marshall McLuhan were alive today to experience the current communications renaissance in the 21st Century global village.
In her spare time Sam loves to garden, bicycle, volunteer for her church (including maintain the website for their Guatemala mission) create jewelry, and “collect” interesting people.  She also enjoys photography and travel and has visited or lived in 23 different countries to date.
